![With a little help from his friend and co-star Selena Gomez, Martin Short found a meaningful way to honor his late daughter, Katherine, who died by suicide earlier this year.
At the Rare Impact Fund Gala, Selena announced the creation of The Katherine Short Legacy Award, which was created in honor of Katherine's work as a social worker and presented to the La Familia Counseling Center.
Martin presented the award and tearfully spoke about his daughter.
"Katherine fought for so long with extreme mental health issues — borderline personality [disorder], other things — and she did the best she could until she couldn't," he shared. "Raising these kinds of funds and awareness to help people understand that mental health is simply an illness, not to be hidden in the shadows or perceived as a family embarrassment."
Martin also spoke about the pain of losing his daughter that he'll always carry.
"I think that's simply because what we deeply love we can never lose. For all that we love deeply becomes part of us."
