💥🎆 Tchaikovsky – 1812 Overture, Op. 49 Boston Pops Orchestra – Keith Lockhart, conductor 🎼 Army cannons – fired during the concert 🪖 • In a letter to his patron Nadezhda von Meck, Tchaikovsky warned that this overture would be very noisy, written without any affection, and that for that reason it would probably lack artistic merit. The commission had come from Nikolai Rubinstein, who headed the music section of the Moscow Exhibition and wanted a new work for the event. Before starting, Tchaikovsky had told his publisher Pyotr Jurgenson that he would not lift a finger as long as nobody commissioned anything from him. To the same patron he wrote that nothing was more disagreeable to him than composing for festivities, and he told the publisher that he had started work with an inexplicable aversion. The overture premiered officially in Moscow, and Tchaikovsky himself went on to conduct it 13 times. • Listen again and notice the instant when the camera, after the soldiers, leaves the conductor and shows the stage from far away: right after, a strong, deep thud sounds, wider than the shots in the soldiers' scene, and the image shows no flash at all. • This excerpt is from the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular of July 4, 2019, at the Hatch Shell, on the banks of the Charles River in Boston, with the orchestra conducted by Keith Lockhart. The concert was broadcast live on television, and the cut ends with fireworks bursting in the dark sky. The camera alternates between the illuminated bandshell and soldiers in camouflage uniforms beside a cannon at night, and one of them raises an open hand before several shots. Years later, Lockhart said that most Americans have come to think of the 1812 Overture as theirs. • 👉 Follow for the best of classical music daily on your feed. • #tchaikovsky #1812overture #bostonpops #classicalmusic

Is it just me?? 🤯😭
Some of y’all have become so obsessed with being the most ideologically pure person in the room that you’ve completely lost sight of who the actual op is. Political commentary is not the same thing as political organizing. Similarly, outrage is not a substitute for action. Having a massive platform means absolutely nothing if all you’re doing is convincing people that meaningful progress is impossible. How, pray-tell, is one planning to dismantle a system they refuse to participate in changing? 🤡 The greedy are counting on our division, our exhaustion and our political apathy. STOP DOING THEIR WORK FOR THEM. Organize. Mobilize. VOTE. 🗳️
