Some autistic kids don’t understand when a request is genuinely impossible: ▪️Asking for a broken object to work exactly the way it did before ▪️Asking for a food or product that is completely sold out ▪️Asking to go somewhere that is closed ▪️Asking to bring back an item that was lost and cannot be found ▪️Asking for the weather to change ▪️Asking to make a character in a book or video do something different ▪️Asking to make a pet behave in a very specific way on command ▪️Asking to make someone stop crying, coughing, or making another involuntary sound Repeated attempts to help them achieve the impossible can keep hope alive and ultimately make the disappointment BIGGER. So when the request is impossible, show them you understand what they want, then be clear that it cannot happen. Your job is not to prevent disappointment, it’s to give clear information and help them through it. In therapy, kids can practice accepting an alternative after a small, less-important request cannot be met. Over time, kids can build more flexibility, tolerate disappointment, and learn what to do when the answer truly cannot change 💙 #autism #autistic #autismawareness #autismacceptance #neurodivergent
The final 2 days of Fatbiking & Packrafting the Oregon Coast Trail looked at the ground we’d covered & said “You ain’t seen nothing yet.” We had many good times, but a lot of hard going too. Hours on hours of riding through cold wet fog. The unrepentant moisture. High tides shutting down access points & forcing long reroutes. Logs, soft sand, and other obstacles making us carry our fully loaded bikes. The first 3/4 of the trip had tested us & we were feeling it. On day 7 though, something shifted. Fog & clouds lifted as we climbed Cape Blanco, revealing rugged headlands & wide sandy beaches soaring into the horizon. Traversing through those southern beaches, towns & capes was even better than it had appeared from above. We enjoyed sun for miles on end, and then, right around the end of day 7 as we approached the pistol river, the magic happened. Wind strummed the sand into gentle flows across the beach. The sun hummed lower, rapidly turning bright gold along the horizon. The waves seemed to crash on cue, their rich blue accentuating the intensity of the light. As we approached the next stacks of rocks, we saw it all come together in a symphony of light & movement played out across the jagged stage of rocks. It was a moment I’ll never forget. We all rode around in awe, soaking it all in, grateful to have gotten a perfect Oregon Coast evening at last. The high stuck with us after the sun set, but we had a few miles to go. We all locked back in after Kurt nearly got swept away by the Pistol River & gratefully slid into bed at Crook Point. Finally, the following day we entered the Samuel H Boardman scenic corridor. With only a few miles left to the border and plenty of time left in the day, we enjoyed the numerous stunning vistas on offer. We paddled across the Chetco River, the final crossing on our journey, and without any further fuss for the cyclists, we rode a few more miles of beach & road, the rolled up to the border of California. 400 miles. 10 rivers paddled. Some very sandy smiles. We were done, and damn was that a good time. @traveloregon @thepeoplescoast @oregonswildriverscoast @astraldesigns 📸: @masoncasey @shredskyy

📸: Dok.
