When Linus Torvalds was asked what he would do differently if he could start Linux development all over again, his answer was surprisingly relatable. Knowing everything he knows now about the difficulty of building and maintaining an operating system kernel, Torvalds joked that he probably wouldn’t have started in the first place. He explained that undertaking something so ambitious requires a certain amount of naivety, especially when you have no idea how enormous the project will eventually become.

But the creator of Linux also admitted he wouldn’t actually change anything. What began in 1991 as a personal operating system project eventually grew into one of the most influential open-source software projects in computer history, powering servers, supercomputers, embedded systems, and Android devices worldwide. Despite the challenges, Torvalds described the experience as incredibly enjoyable and said he felt fortunate about how everything turned out.
