🚶🕰️ George Frideric Handel – Passacaglia, Suite No. 7 in G minor, HWV 432
Alexander Motovilov – piano and arrangement 🎹
•
In the preface to the 1720 volume in which this suite came out, Handel wrote that he had been obliged to publish some of those pieces because surreptitious and incorrect copies of them had spread. He does not say which ones they were. In the same text, he says he added several new pieces to make the work more useful, and the volume gathered eight suites. According to the auction house Sotheby's, this is probably the only volume of Handel's music published under the composer's direct supervision. At the time, Handel was also busy with opera in London: he had been given the task of finding singers for a company founded by a group of aristocrats.
•
Listen again and pay attention to the moment when the camera shows the pianist's face in profile and then goes straight back to the hands: there, above the bass, you hear much more sound in the high register of the piano than in the first part of the video.
•
Alexander Motovilov is a pianist and composer based in Tartu, Estonia, and performs solo or with the Motovilov Trio, alongside violinist Evgeny Pravilov and violist Daria Motovilova. According to the pianist's website, the recordings he has released add up to more than 50 million streams. In this video, he comes in softly, after a moment of silence, and keeps the notes at a steady pace until the end of the excerpt, which finishes with them still in motion. In the video gallery on the site, this Passacaglia appears first and is the only title bearing another composer's name.
