Pay Disputes and Dirty Big Data Centres | Path to Power Episode 145

Available now. Link in bio.

Former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and entrepreneur Áine Kerr join Matt to discuss the reasons for, and the impact of, the public sector pay disputes and how inevitably they will get solved, but when and at what price? After Ireland hosts a major conference on AI, Áine and Leo, who both participated, report on what took place and look to Ireland and the EU’s future with AI. In particular, they focus on environmental issues – dirty big data centres – and the impact on jobs. They debate the underfunding of third-level education but differ on who should provide the money to fund the gap. Drumcree/Garvaghy Road “settlement” and the long-term impacts assessed. As the ESRI reports that most immigrants move to affluent areas, Leo offers his assessment of that finding.

The Unions failed their members. These guys on six figure salaries failed miserably to negotiate with government on behalf of their members who pay their big salaries. Leo talking rubbish.

My theory and analysis is that the pay deal was already agreed between the government and unions. And both of them played out their parts rather unconvincingly. The unions have increased their memberships because of the strike. I’m left to wonder why the government would want the unions to increase their membership, but I suppose the heads of these organisations have a lot more in common with each other than the people they’re supposed to represent. Like the participants in this interview, they are all too cozy with each other. It’s only my opinion, but it seems like a grotesque farce to me.

He is correct here to a large extent. Still not a fan.....he is a big part of the current political malaise.

He reminds me of Tony Blair, did so much damage to his country yet has the arrogance to keep speaking
