Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin have struck a deal to ban horse-drawn carriages citywide following the death of an 18-year-old tourist who was thrown from a carriage in Central Park.

"The horse carriage industry is coming to an end in New York City," Mamdani wrote on X, pledging to protect workers, owners and horses.

The proposed ban, named Romanch's Law after the teenager, would take effect in June 2028 if approved, with a City Council vote expected Oct. 22.

The teen's family says an earlier ban could have prevented his death, while critics argue the legislation threatens workers' livelihoods and one of Central Park's most recognizable attractions.

The weirdest thing I’ve ever worn… or the coolest? 💎

18-year-old Texas detention deputy Karla Beltran was fired after photos surfaced showing her posing in uniform with female inmates behind a glass partition. The pictures show them smiling, doing peace signs, and throwing up their middle fingers in one shot.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office dismissed her on October 12 while she was still on probation. Officials are investigating who took the photos and how they ended up online. No criminal charges are pending in connection with the incident.
