Why Should We Warm Up the Knees Before Training?

Warming up does not mean making the knee joint itself hot. The goal is to prepare the quadriceps, hamstrings, and surrounding structures for movement and load from different angles.

Why do we warm up the knees at different angles before the main workout?

When we bend and straighten the knees at different angles:

* Muscle temperature increases: Muscles become better prepared for contraction and movement.
* Blood flow increases: Blood circulation helps support muscle activity.
* The nervous system gets prepared: It improves muscle activation and coordination before the main workout.
* The knee joint moves progressively: The joint is gradually exposed to the range of motion needed for training instead of suddenly experiencing high loads.
* Tendons and muscles adapt to force: They are progressively exposed to the demands of training.

By changing the angle, the amount of force and muscle activity around the knee changes. Therefore, we prepare the muscles for different parts of the movement rather than just one position.

An important point

We do not literally warm up the ligaments. Instead, we prepare the muscles, tendons, nervous system, and movement patterns to handle training loads more effectively.

The main goal of warming up is to improve neuromuscular readiness, muscle activation, and gradual load tolerance.

Why do we use body weight?

During the warm-up, we usually do not want to introduce excessive external resistance immediately. Body weight allows us to increase the training demand gradually.

The correct progression is:

Movement → Range of Motion → Speed → Force

Start with controlled movements, gradually increase the range of motion, then increase speed and finally introduce greater force as appropriate for the workout.
