Somewhere in the last seven days 🖤 Thank you @airbnb for having me last night 💫
A group of university students in Serbia just toppled a brutal 14-year dictatorship without firing a single shot. While much of the media ignores the story, this seismic shift might go down in history next to the achievements of movements led by Ghandi, Mandela, and Havel. (More details about how the students pulled it off are on my Substack via the link in bio.) In a nutshell, here’s what happened as told to me by @bojnovak, the Serbian actor and political activist. The student movement ignited in November 2024 when the renovated canopy of a train station collapsed, killing 16 people. Most blamed corruption and shoddy construction. To many, the tragedy encapsulated how the country’s strongman leader, Alexsandar Vucic, had turned Serbia into a Mafia state. In response, students shut down all six universities and called for 16 minutes of silence (a minute for each victim) each day at the exact time of the roof collapse. The protests spread nationwide after Vucic’s thugs beat up drama students at a protest in Belgrade. Ultimately, 85 academic departments at every university created assemblies to debate and craft demands, which included broad accountability for corruption and human rights violations. By design this was a faceless movement. It had no spokesperson. Students also trekked into the countryside — some walking hundreds of miles along isolated roads — to organize villagers, many of whom formed their own assemblies. Power was being built from the grassroots and it was swelling. Ultimately the pressure forced a new national election. The students created their own list of candidates for parliament, which has 250 seats. Everyone on the student list was a non-politician: doctors, farmers, factory workers, artists, writers, and professors. Few thought the student list had a chance. Yet it won a majority of 141 seats and over 51% of the vote. This student movement will soon form a government where one person will emerge as Prime Minister. All will work to help restore democracy. Bojana said the movement was more than a revolution; she called it an “exorcism”. Thank you, Serbia. Thank you, students. Inspiring at every level.🙏🙏🔥🔥
