#OnThisDay in 2017, Canada lost one of its greatest voices.
Gord Downie, the unmistakable frontman of The Tragically Hip, was more than a rock star. He was a poet who turned hockey, history, heartbreak, and everyday life into something extraordinary.
From “Bobcaygeon” to “Ahead by a Century,” Gord gave us songs that felt like home.
Even while battling terminal brain cancer, he used his remaining time to champion Indigenous reconciliation and remind us that there was still important work to be done.
Nine years later, his words still resonate, his music still brings us together, and his legacy lives on.
Rest easy, Gord. You were truly ahead by a century.
