Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) endorsed Michigan GOP Senate candidate Mike Rogers on Sunday. Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens gave a surprise endorsement to Michigan GOP Senate candidate Mike Rogers on Sunday amid a rift with Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed that has come front and center in the final sprint to Election Day.  “Our Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, Abdul, said that I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away, and he’s right,” Stevens said in a video posted on social media Sunday. “And that’s why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today.” She went to a Detroit church with Rogers on Sunday and sat next to him during the service before announcing her endorsement. Stevens’ decision stunned Democratic leaders, including Reps. Debbie Dingell of Michigan and Jamie Raskin of Maryland, who had spoken with her Saturday evening and said she had assured them she would vote for El-Sayed. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, who backed Stevens during the primary, called her decision a “betrayal.”  CNN’s Anderson Cooper interviewed Stevens Sunday and repeatedly asked her what changed her mind between her conversation with Dingell late Saturday night and Sunday morning. She did not answer him directly. At one point, she told him, “That’s just where I landed with this. Of all the L’s they’ve taken tonight, El Sayed’s is causing them the most pain, for obvious reasons, and I’m enjoying every second of it. Abdul El Sayed’s ascension in American politics is a testament to the power of grassroots momentum, principled populism, and sharp public health leadership A Rhodes scholar, physician, and epidemiologist, he first gained prominence at about 30 years old when he was appointed health director of Detroit. In that role, he rebuilt the city’s public health infrastructure post-bankruptcy, spearheading vital programs to inspect lead in school water supplies and provide free eyeglasses to low income students. He stepped onto the national political stage during the 2018 Michigan gubernatorial primary. Though he lost the nomination to Gretchen Whitmer, his unapologetic platform centered on Medicare for All, environmental justice, and refusing corporate PAC money, won him a dedicated progressive following and high profile endorsements from leaders like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez. Rather than fading after the loss, El Sayed expanded his reach as an author, educator, podcast host, and county health officer. His steady advocacy paid off during the 2026 U.S. Senate Democratic primary in Michigan. Harnessing an energized coalition of young and working-class voters across more than 500 town halls, El Sayed mounted a dramatic grass roots surge to narrowly defeat US Representative Haley Stevens. His historic nomination positioning him to potentially become the first Muslim member of the U.S. Senate marks his transformation from political underdog to major force within the Democratic Party
