Tesla just shared a behind-the-scenes look at the development of its next-generation Roadster, showing the engineering and testing that went into building a car capable of leaving the ground.
The footage shows engineers assembling prototypes, testing experimental hardware and developing the massive curved ramp used during the Roadster’s reveal. One of the biggest challenges was getting the car to drive upside down before releasing it into the air and controlling its descent.
Tesla and SpaceX engineers developed a propulsion system using 10 cold-gas thrusters powered by roughly 600 liters of compressed gas. The car also features an advanced suction system that generates enough downforce to keep it attached to an inverted surface.
During the October 15 demonstration, the Roadster successfully drove upside down, performed an aerial flip and launched itself over a lineup of Tesla vehicles. Tesla also demonstrated a claimed 0–60 mph time of just 0.81 seconds.
Production is currently targeted for 2028, with the most extreme rocket-powered configuration planned as a limited, invitation-only version.
