Cultivating a Love for Reading | Korey Collins and Kim Bearden

Teaching kids how to read is only part of the job. How do we inspire them to actually WANT to read?

In this episode of The RCA Mix, Kim Bearden sits down with reading expert and father of six Korey Collins to discuss his personal reading journey, the science of reading, and what happens after students develop essential literacy skills.

Decoding matters. Fluency matters. Comprehension matters. But if students rarely pick up a book once they learn how to read, there is still work to be done.

Korey shares practical strategies for helping students strengthen their reading skills, read more frequently, discover books they enjoy, and develop a genuine love of reading.

We must teach students how to read. Then, we must help them discover why they would want to.

If you want your students to become lifelong readers, not just kids who know how to read, this conversation is for you.

I love such stories. 👏 I’ve learned that turning a child into a reader doesn’t require complex strategies. It truly starts with simple, everyday habits. In our home, we cultivate an environment where books are just part of the landscape...scattered on coffee tables and lined up on low, easy-to-reach shelves. I try to foster this love by letting my kids see me read for pleasure, establishing cozy, screen-free routines in the afternoon or before bed, and giving them the complete freedom to choose their own books (even if it means reading the same book for the fifth time 😍). I genuinely believe that treating reading as a shared treat rather than a chore transforms it from a rigid mechanical skill into a comforting, lifelong escape. One of my absolute favorite traditions is turning stories into short, custom 'audiobooks' for my kids to fall asleep to. It’s like a traditional bedtime story, but elevated with music and the comforting familiarity of my own voice. I write transformational stories specifically for them, casting my children as the heroes of their own adventures. The magic has truly come full circle when they started writing their own stories, too. Proud mom here. Witnessing this profound impact at home inspired me to take this passion a step further: I now write personalized stories for adults, too. Just like children, adults often need a safe space to explore new possibilities. By stepping into the journey of a custom-tailored main character, my adult readers can discover the fresh perspectives they are actively searching for to heal, find joy, and grow. Ultimately, whether I am writing for my children or for adults seeking a shift in their own lives, the most precious part of this entire journey remains the same: these quiet, creative moments have connected us on a level deeper than I ever could have imagined.❤️

Goosebumps was a childhood fave of mine, too! I just asked Derek if he ever read Goosebumps… I’m sure you know how he answered 🙄🤪 But he’s currently reading A Picture of Dorian Grey so it’s never truly too late to make a reader out of a person.

Yes - Goosebumps by R.L. Stine is so nostalgic! It was the Babysitter’s Club for me. I used to treat those Scholastic Book Club pamphlets like the Amazon of my childhood.
