On May 9, 1990, legendary comedians Robin Williams and Whoopi Goldberg appeared before the US Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources to support the Homelessness Prevention and Community Revitalization Act. The proposed legislation aimed to tackle homelessness by expanding access to housing, mental health services and community support programmes. 🇺🇸

During his testimony, Williams urged lawmakers to address the causes of homelessness rather than simply responding to its consequences. He emphasised the suffering of homeless children and argued that preventing people from losing their homes was more effective than repeatedly helping them after they had already fallen into crisis. Goldberg also criticised political leaders for failing to prioritise vulnerable Americans.

Both entertainers were already heavily involved in Comic Relief alongside Billy Crystal, using comedy performances to raise millions of dollars for homelessness charities. By the time of the hearing, the initiative had raised approximately $8.7 million, demonstrating how their influence extended far beyond entertainment and into humanitarian advocacy. ❤️🏠
