In February 1992, Princess Diana visited the Taj Mahal during an official trip to India with Prince Charles.

Charles had other engagements and did not accompany her to the monument, leaving Diana to visit it alone. Sitting quietly in front of the white marble monument, Diana appeared thoughtful and distant.

The image became one of the most memorable photographs of her royal life, made even more poignant by the fact that the Taj Mahal is globally associated with eternal love.

At the time, the deeper difficulties within Charles and Diana’s marriage were not yet fully understood by the public. In hindsight, however, the photograph took on a powerful symbolic meaning.
