Speaking to reporters, McGuinty confirmed that fatalities and injuries had occurred but said he could not yet provide the number of casualties or explain what caused the explosion. Alberta MP Dane Lloyd separately described reports of significant casualties. Powerful winds helped spread the fire beyond the base, prompting emergency services to protect neighbouring areas. 
Prime Minister Mark Carney described the situation as a serious incident, while Alberta Premier Danielle Smith called the fire tragic and said military personnel had been affected. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are involved in the investigation. Authorities have not established the cause, and there is no verified evidence that the incident was an attack.
