Composed in Rome in 1862, “Gnomenreigen” (Dance of the Gnomes) is the second of Franz Liszt’s Two Concert Études, dedicated to his talented pupil Dionys Pruckner. Interestingly, the études were originally written for a piano teaching method but became brilliant concert pieces.
Marked Presto scherzando, the étude portrays a mischievous dance of imaginary gnomes through lightning-fast passages, sparkling trills, and sudden changes of rhythm and dynamics.
