Is “assisted dying” a BIG mistake? The 2 doctors behind the movement are having regrets.

Ending a patient’s life with a lethal prescription can cost a health insurer under $300. Keeping that same person alive at home with real care can cost more than $77,000 a year.

Put those two numbers side by side, and the push to legalize medically assisted dying starts to look less like a debate about compassion and more like a financial escape hatch for a broken healthcare system.

And this time, the warning is not coming from religious groups or politicians. In October 2026, two University of Toronto psychiatrists who helped build Canada’s assisted-dying program, and who support it in principle, wrote in the New York Times that it has gone too far, too fast.

It is “no longer an option of last resort.” It has grown 16-fold in eight years, to roughly 5% of all deaths in Canada.

They described a grandmother in her 70s approved for assisted death after she could no longer cook Sunday dinner, until counseling helped her see her family valued who she was, not what she did.

I think this isn't about taking away anyone’s choice, but should be about what happens when the cheapest option becomes the easiest one.
