[ Side Door ]

If I had to name a few of Singapore’s top cocktail bars, Side Door would be among them.

Approaching its third year, Side Door has built a bar around their clear personal ideology, one that feels less concerned with fitting into an established mould and more with doing things exactly as its team believes they should be done.

The space reads like a host’s living room, with the warmth of an open kitchen and the coziness of a casual hangout spot. An owner-operator-led team brings a sincerity to its hospitality that feels casual without being careless. Behind the bar are two globally acclaimed bartenders, bringing a distinct style to a menu that feels unmistakably their own.

Despite an arduous overhaul, the latest menu feels like a natural continuation of its predecessor. There is no overarching theme to tie everything together, nor any apparent need to force one. Instead, the drinks seem to follow a simpler principle: if it makes sense to the team, it belongs on the menu.

And perhaps that is where Side Door finds its identity.

Singapore is spoilt for choice when it comes to cocktail bars. We have the reliable, high-volume establishments, the wonderfully niche spots pushing the definition and bounds of what a cocktail is, the bars devoted to getting the classics right, and everything in between. Side Door occupies a space of its own. Its approach to mixology is almost adorably innocent in its lack of pretense, yet ghastly precise in execution. Spend a little time with the drinks and the layers begin to reveal themselves. Combinations that might seem unexpected on paper come together with surprising cohesion, each component distinct without ever feeling out of place.

If you care about cocktail bars at all, Side Door should already be on your radar. If it isn’t, it is high time you made the trip down for a few glasses. Stay for dinner, too. The kitchen holds its own, making this a place worth settling into for the evening rather than simply dropping by for a drink.
