A state can look enormous on a map while containing fewer people than a much smaller one. According to the 2020 Census, 80 percent of Americans lived in urban areas, a reminder that the space a place occupies tells us surprisingly little about how many people call it home. This collection takes the familiar outline of the United States and asks you to look at it through different lenses. One map highlights the country’s terrain, while another resizes states according to population density. Others explore tree cover, abandoned railroad lines, noise levels, land use, and unusual town names. There is even a suggested road trip connecting places named Springfield. Together, they show how the same country can produce completely different visual patterns depending on what you choose to measure. Mountains become more noticeable when borders fade away. Population maps shift attention toward where people are concentrated. A map of railway routes brings a different network into view altogether. Each image also deserves a look at its date, legend, and method, especially when it presents statistics that can change over time. These slides combine different subjects and datasets, rather than offering a single snapshot of America today.
