11 minutes agoI’ve had copycats of my work my whole life and the answer is always the same “I was inspired by you “ even when someone bought 4 of my dress designs took them to Asia and had them copied down to the print and unique trims !! Sadly you only need to change the smallest thing ,a tiny detail like an eye in a different place and then it’s their design The only way to fight this is to keep coming up with new work Sorry but that’s all that will come of this
16 minutes agoYes super frustrating the only solace I’ve had over it is that I always have new ideas and someone who needs to copy someone else doesn’t I guess 🥴
an hour ago@juno.bonobocat Good for you! I understand that as an art student, you might be flattered when someone copies your work. Your perspective might change once you get older and become a professional artist. Or maybe not, and that's ok for your own work. (Although I don't know any professional artist who is happy about people ripping off their work.) What is not ok is spreading misinformation and attacking artists for protecting what is theirs. It's not "selfish", and one day hopefully you will understand.
an hour agoYou have cool stuff it just shows it's appreciated. Keep doing what your doing others will copy. I own a large surf company we get copied all the time. You leed they follow it's the way life works. Keep doing what you do👏
an hour agoI’m sorry you had to deal with this stressful situation it is never OK to steal from artists!!!
an hour agoI am so sorry to hear this !! Is there a way you can trademark your mermaids, composition and color you use on them!! It’s very sad you an are amazing artist ❤️
an hour ago@jshelton11 That is very true. Nobody creates in the void, we all inspire each other, and that's the beauty of it. As I wrote, it's ok to copy to study and to learn – but not to show it off on your account as your own work, when it is clearly a rip off. And what is also not ok is reacting like this person when being made aware that it is not ok. Well, I really hope that was only her first reaction.
2 hours agoSome of the most famous artists in history have copied, borrowed from, imitated, and reinterpreted other artists’ work. In fact, studying and imitating other artists is one of the oldest methods of learning art. There is an important distinction between copying to learn, borrowing for inspiration, and just passing someone else’s work off as your own. Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, Andy Warhol, Henri Matisse, Salvador Dali… they all copied from other artists. There’s even a famous saying: “Good artists copy; great artists steal.” The quotation is often attributed to Picasso, although its precise origin is disputed. In any case, I would take it as a compliment that someone admires your work enough to attempt to do it as an amateur. If you put your work on social media, someone will learn from it by trying to copy the work.
2 hours agoYes I’ve experienced this quite a few times both by other artists and big companies it’s incredibly frustrating and hard to make someone stop who doesn’t see what the issue is. Perhaps you should check out @acid they support artists with copyright design rights xx
2 hours ago@altrove.lab Ah yes, tell me about unrealistic customer expectations...Hopefully you can solve it and sell your custom teddy bear to another person!
2 hours ago@juno.bonobocat Well, art is protected by copyright law and there is a reason for that. Because there is a lot of work behind my mermaids, and I live from my art. Copying someone is stealing something another person worked hard for. Just because you cannot touch it, it is just as wrong as stealing an object. And no, it's not like making "some art that might be a little bit uninspired". It's not cute to use someone's work and show and sell it pretending it is yours. And finally: It's illegal, whether you agree or not, and if you find it upsetting that I protect my work then you are just lacking respect for artists and their art.
2 hours agoI’m really surprised at the tone of this post - I don’t really see the threat this artist was posing to you especially considering the difference in followers / influence I assume you two have. Dealing with this situation in private is one thing but publicly shaming is another. Your ideas around copyright are yours to deal with. I’m just saying, if I was the artist receiving this message & THEN being posted about, I would be humiliated & apprehensive to continue creating art at all. Just disappointing in my opinion.
2 hours agoI am always looking for great examples to use when I am teaching students about copyright, plagiarism and stealing. What you wrote and how you responded is incredibly mindful and generous considering how ignorant and callous this person is. I would love to show your post in my class or even better have you as a guest speaker (virtually or in person).
