US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has overseen the removal of more than two dozen senior military leaders, including roughly 10% of the military’s active-duty generals and admirals, as the Pentagon undergoes a major leadership shake-up. The latest departure comes as President Donald Trump weighs fresh military action against Iran, raising questions about whether the changes could affect the US military’s approach to a potential conflict. The latest officer to leave is Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia, the Pentagon’s top strategy and planning officer on the Joint Staff. A spokesperson for Joint Chiefs Chairman General Dan Caine confirmed his departure, but no official reason has been given for his removal. Sylvia served as director for strategy, plans and policy, known as J5. The position plays an important role in advising the military’s top leadership on international strategy, operational planning and national security policy. His departure comes at a critical moment. According to CNN, US forces in the Middle East are prepared to launch potentially major operations against Iran within 96 hours of receiving an order from Trump. US officials have suggested that a decision could come after the November midterm elections, although Trump has not made a final commitment. The timing raises questions about whether the leadership shake-up is connected to preparations for a possible new campaign against Iran. There have been concerns within military circles about aspects of US military planning and operations, although there is no confirmed evidence that Sylvia was removed over disagreements about Iran. Previous departures have also fuelled questions about the administration’s relationship with senior military leadership. Army Chief of Staff General Randy George was forced to retire in April as Trump signalled plans to intensify the conflict with Iran. Sylvia’s predecessor, Lieutenant General Joe McGee, reportedly came under pressure after pushing back against Hegseth and Caine on issues including Russia, Ukraine and US military operations in the Caribbean. #pentagon #petehegseth #usmilitary #military #MilitaryHistory
