MF DOOM’s signature metal mask began as a replica of the helmet worn by Maximus in Gladiator. DOOM and his friend KEO spotted it in a New York comic book store. KEO removed the helmet, kept the faceplate and fitted it with an adjustable lining so DOOM could wear it onstage. Before that, DOOM wore a much simpler mask. KEO had cut a cheap plastic face covering into shape, spray painted it silver and drawn on details inspired by Marvel’s Doctor Doom. That influence ran deeper than the design. Dumile had been called “Doom” since childhood and saw something of himself in the comic book villain. The mask let him step into a character while keeping his own life private. He could perform as DOOM, then leave the stage and move through the world as Daniel Dumile. For listeners, the unanswered questions became part of the experience: who was behind it, and how much of the villain was real? The mystery drew people in. His music kept them there.
