The Draughtsmans Contract (1982)
Directed by Peter Greenaway.
This stylish period drama set in 1694 follows an arrogant artist, Mr Neville, who is hired by Mrs. Herbert to create twelve detailed drawings of her husband’s country estate. Within the contract Mr Neville demands payment and specific sexual favours from Mrs Herbert for each complete drawing.
The film is highly visually impressive, scattered with subtle clues, symmetry and clever dialogue that guide us towards the intensions of the characters.
I was enamoured by the costumes and set design in particular.
