Even after a wildfire has passed through an area, smoke can linger close to the forest floor for days, depending on weather conditions and remaining fire activity.
In some cases, fire can continue to smolder underground, slowly burning through roots and organic material in the soil. This can persist long after the fire has passed and can cause further production of smoke, or even reignition.
