Nature is unnatural.
A new normal, some call it.
Normal:
a cozy, front-parlor, grandmotherly kind of word.
But inadequate to describe a world spinning off its axis.
Corrupted air.
Contaminated breath.
Savage weather.
Desiccated dirt.
Wild fires.
Raging floods.
Melting ice.
Rising seas.
Acid oceans. by @thephotosociety

When Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79, it destroyed Pompeii and also buried nearby Herculaneum, including the library of the Villa of the Papyri, under some 60 feet of volcanic material. That covering shielded hundreds of papyrus scrolls from the flames, but the heat carbonized them into fragile, distorted lumps too delicate to handle.
It remains the only library known to have survived from the Greco-Roman world, yet its texts stayed unreadable for centuries, since even a light touch could reduce them to ash.
Today most of the scrolls are held in Naples, in the Biblioteca Nazionale, where a dedicated workshop for conserving the Herculaneum papyri has operated within the library since 1910.
Nearly two millennia later, things are changing. Thanks to particle accelerators and artificial intelligence, researchers can now virtually “unwrap” the scrolls and read them without ever opening them. The effort is driven by the Vesuvius Challenge. @thephotosociety @natgeo by @thephotosociety

The state of Kerala occupies the western tip of southern India, had a left-wing government since 1957 for many years to follow and about 32 milioni inhabitants. Unlike other states of the subcontinent has a high literacy rate, by almost 100% of the population. Despite the country’s economic growth, due mainly to the development of the tourism industry in Kerala the economic disparity between rich and poor is striking. Most of the population consists of farmers and fishermen who earn an average of 50 euros per month

Orange flame gave power and comfort since the invention of fire.
Burning wood.
Burning oil, coal, methane gas,
the dead ooze of ancient seafloors and forgotten rivers.
Now fire hides its dragon face in thrusting pistons, electric thunderbolts, blazing furnaces.
Fuels from the fossil dead give possibility and pleasure.
Yet the necropolis comes back to haunt us.
Corpses, burning.
Cerulean blanket overhead,
once the realm of heavenly hosts,
has become a garbage dump. by @thephotosociety

One carbon and two oxygen atoms make carbon dioxide.
One carbon and four hydrogen atoms make methane.
One mouth and two lungs:
fifteen times each minute, twenty thousand times each day, every human life inhales.

Spikes, colours and a glow that only appears under UV light. 🕷️

I photographed this spiny spider of the genus Micrathena in Ecuador’s Chocó rainforest, and I’m still fascinated by what ultraviolet light reveals.

This isn’t bioluminescence. It’s fluorescence: compounds in the spider’s body absorb UV radiation and re-emit some of that energy as visible light.

A study published in Biology Letters in 2007 found that fluorescence varies widely among spiders. The researchers even photographed Micrathena gracilis glowing under UV, showing that its abdominal cuticle can fluoresce. They suggested that this phenomenon might influence how spiders interact with predators and prey, although its exact function remains uncertain.

Could something similar explain the glow of this Ecuadorian spider? It’s a possibility, but we’d need species-specific research to know for sure.

The more time I spend photographing arthropods, the more I realise how much of their world remains invisible to us.

Even after a wildfire has passed through an area, smoke can linger close to the forest floor for days, depending on weather conditions and remaining fire activity.

In some cases, fire can continue to smolder underground, slowly burning through roots and organic material in the soil. This can persist long after the fire has passed and can cause further production of smoke, or even reignition. by @thephotosociety

How do you describe such a magnificent creature as the praying mantis, other-worldly perhaps ? its gentle rocking is the only thing that gave it away in the dark of the desert night. Once I could actually translate its presence, I began to see the unspoken language that allows this extraordinary predator to exist in harmony and entirely invisible within its surroundings. It appears calm and yet this a creature so focused, with such a sharp precision and speed that when pray fails to translate its presence, there is without doubt no second chance to do so. It is not calm, it is primed. It is the perfect predator and another one of natures marvels living here in the mountains of the Asir Province of southwest Saudi Arabia. 🖤🖤 @ncw_center @natgeo @thephotosociety #saudi #wild #mantis #mountains #insect by @thephotosociety

Flames are only one way a wildfire impacts the world around it. As wildfires burn, they release massive amounts of smoke into the atmosphere, posing serious health risks to humans and wildlife, especially those with pre-existing respiratory conditions such as asthma.

Beyond its health effects, wildfire smoke can influence atmospheric temperatures, while greenhouse gases released by large fires can contribute to the warming of the planet itself. by @thephotosociety
