In Nyarugusu refugee camp, Tanzania, 12-year-old Congolese refugees Lukaba and Wabu became best friends through a simple act of sharing. Lukaba had a pen but no book. Wabu had a book but no pen.
“He gave me his book, and I gave him my pen and we've been best friends ever since,” says Wabu.
Now in Grade 5, the two boys study, play and learn side by side. But learning is not always easy. Lukaba still does not have an exercise book of his own, while schools across the camp face shortages of learning materials, overcrowded classrooms, few teachers and limited WASH facilities.
UNICEF and partners are helping refugee children access the essential supplies they need to learn. Because every child deserves the tools, support and opportunity to build a brighter future.
