A mother should not have to choose between caring for her children and earning a living. 💙

Meet Salome, a market trader and mother of twins in Dar es Salaam, finding a safe place for her children while she works can make all the difference.

This International Day of Care and Support, UNICEF Tanzania and the Government of Tanzania are highlighting the importance of accessible, quality childcare that allows children to grow and learn while parents work to support their families.

Through workplace-based early childhood development centres, we can help create safer spaces for children, more opportunities for women and a future where caregiving is a shared responsibility.

When families are supported, children have a better chance to thrive.

In Nyarugusu refugee camp, Tanzania, 12-year-old Congolese refugees Lukaba and Wabu became best friends through a simple act of sharing. Lukaba had a pen but no book. Wabu had a book but no pen.

“He gave me his book, and I gave him my pen and we've been best friends ever since,” says Wabu.

Now in Grade 5, the two boys study, play and learn side by side. But learning is not always easy. Lukaba still does not have an exercise book of his own, while schools across the camp face shortages of learning materials, overcrowded classrooms, few teachers and limited WASH facilities.

UNICEF and partners are helping refugee children access the essential supplies they need to learn. Because every child deserves the tools, support and opportunity to build a brighter future. by @uniceftz

At the @ellafoundationtz, we saw adolescents with disabilities developing practical tailoring skills through accessible vocational training.

The initiative is one of the projects implemented by 15 grassroots youth-led and women-led Civil Society Organisations (CSO) which received capacity building training and seed funding through our partnership with the @fcstanzania

The programme supports 20 out-of-school adolescents with disabilities through sign-language interpreters, personal assistants, mentoring and adapted equipment, helping them build confidence and skills for employment.
