HE FINISHED SECOND IN A SCHOOL RACE. YEARS LATER, HE WAS WINNING A MEDAL FOR GHANA.
Sadiq Alo’s love for athletics began during a simple 800m race at his basic school in Tema New Town.
He finished second, surprisingly beating several pupils who trained regularly. The cheers from his schoolmates sparked a passion that would eventually take him onto the international stage.
Inspired by Kenya’s legendary David Rudisha, Sadiq developed into a competitive 800m runner.
In 2024, he represented Ghana at the CAA Region II Athletics Championships in Accra, winning bronze in a personal best of 1:50.83.
In 2025, he followed that achievement with victory at the Cape Coast Open Championship, clocking 1:51.82.
A former student of St. Augustine’s College and the University of Ghana, Sadiq continues training under Coach William Akuka, who sends his workouts from the United States for supervision in Ghana.
Today, as a prospective Ghana Prisons Service recruit, he continues pursuing his ambitions on and off the track.
And to think that everything started with a school race he didn’t even win.
Sometimes, a little encouragement can change the direction of someone’s life.
