We carry the weight of expectations, responsibility, and criticism, sometimes long after we’ve left the office.

And I don’t think this is exclusive to dentistry.

To my fellow healthcare professionals, I think we need to talk more openly about the mental and emotional weight of the work we do.

We can love our profession, be grateful for the opportunities it provides, and still acknowledge that some days are incredibly hard.

Something else Dr. Yang wrote that really stood out to me was his reminder that “words hurt.”

Because behind every white coat is a human being.

And perhaps the most meaningful part of his message was his simple request for grace.

Not pity. Just grace.

Grace for the professionals who dedicate their lives to helping others. Grace for our colleagues who may be struggling silently. And grace for ourselves when we fall short of the impossible standards we sometimes set.

I didn’t know Dr. Yang personally, but his words have certainly made me reflect.

My heart goes out to his family, friends, and the dental community mourning his loss.

I hope we can honor his message by extending a little more compassion to one another.

You can strive for excellence without demanding perfection from yourself.

And to anyone in healthcare who needs to hear this today: Your worth is not defined by your productivity, your last procedure, or your hardest day.

Let’s take better care of the people who spend their lives taking care of others.

To my fellow healthcare professionals, does this resonate with you?

it’s the “no offense” and then they proceed to say how much that hate being there and hate the experience and hate this and hate that I know they never once have though how detrimental it is as a healthcare provider to hear how hated you are all day

You put into words what so many of us feel. Thank you for sharing this ❤️. Sometimes we forget that we’re human, too. Even when we give our best, some procedures are incredibly difficult, and some patient interactions are challenging despite our efforts. We’re performing surgery on patients who are awake, navigating tongues, cheeks, and saliva while working with precision measured in millimeters to microns. Dentistry is demanding, and perfection isn’t always possible. Our patients’ fears deserve compassion, and we deserve to extend that same compassion to ourselves. We can keep learning, do our best, and recognize the good we do without letting every difficult moment overshadow it. My heart goes out to Dr. Yang’s family, friends, and colleagues. Such a heartbreaking loss. 🤍

I had a patient tell me that I signed my work on his restoration! Well he was appreciative of the time I took to make it perfect but at the same time I know I am a perfectionist and it's something I was told by my professors in college as well. One of them told me I got an A+ when I asked where my one point went. Yes it's hard in many ways.. ownership is harder..

I think dwelling on the negative is human nature. I don’t remember every compliment, or even fully believe it. I will ALWAYS have brain space for everything that goes wrong though! I’m a hygienist, and I have a detailed catalog of every patient that I missed calculus on. It’s only 4 patients in 10 years, but I can still remember every single one.

My bestfriend whos a dentist just moved to Canada for her Masters and just like any international student, she applied for the job of an assistant. The doctor who was a lady, from Egypt, behaved so harshly towards her that she has literally cried for days. And the fact that shes away from us all, in a foreign land, broke my heart... Shes not the type to breakdown and the fact that she couldnt get over this till date (incident happend 4months ago) haunts me. The manager at that clinic didnt even pay her after getting the job done. She is the worst possible human for me for having hurt my bestfriend so bad. The manager, the doctor, and the clinic , I hate yall from the core of my heart for having hurt her that bad.
