Lately, so much social media seems designed to turn men and women against each other.
Self-proclaimed relationship experts and online psychologists teaching manipulation and distrust. Relationships and families are struggling, yet some seem more interested in engagement and selling courses than the consequences.
Then, two nights in a row, I watched something that moved me. Maybe I’m getting older, or less afraid of showing my sensitive side.
First was Dark Matter (s02e05). An unusually quiet, emotional episode - few words, just small acts of kindness that say more than dialogue. A man who had lost the love of his life, his son and his home left a note:“Please just let me find a world where I can love and be loved.”
That line and my reaction caught me completely off guard.
Next night: Trevor Rainbolt’s documentary. A woman wanted to locate a bench in an old photo with her late mother. Trevor searched for months, nearly gave up, then asked the internet for help. He kept returning to it for almost four years.
Daniel, a stranger with a full-time job, spent years searching parks and records in his free time. Others found a forgotten 2006 video Emin had filmed of his grandmother. One family’s memory became a clue for another.
They found the bench. But producer Roberto wanted the date too. His research pointed to an old Halloween event. Josephine, a local official, connected him with Chip, the organiser.
Chip had spent decades improving parks and running free Halloween events to give neighbourhood children somewhere safe to celebrate. When his wife died, she asked him to keep doing it. He kept his promise, investing years and his own money.
Chip had no photos from 2008, so he called his friends Rick and Al. They searched old archives and found the pictures that confirmed the story.
Trevor shared a $5,000 reward and spent another $5,000 memorialising Julia’s mother.
No one owed this woman anything. They simply chose to care.
Amid all that noise, these stories reminded me what people can do when they care.
And yes, men care. Sometimes quietly, practically, persistently - without asking for anything in return.
