The Art of Restraint

What might a form reveal when everything unnecessary is taken away?
For woodcraft artist Park Hong-jun, making begins with the Eastern aesthetics of emptiness and restraint. Ornament is pared back, allowing the grain of the wood, the balance of the form and its intended use to speak for themselves.
In his work, empty space is never merely an absence. It offers room for contemplation, inviting the presence and sensibility of the person who uses the object.
At Maison EMOK, we explore how this quiet philosophy of making lends a different quality to the everyday.
