Europe's 15 Biggest Football Rivalries.
Less than 10 minutes into our interview, Carl Lentz starts to cry. The former celebrity pastor was always a big crier, he says, even before he blew up his life with extramarital affairs that cost him his job and reputation and nearly broke his marriage. “When you make these mistakes that I’ve made, the choices that I made that hurt my family and the people that we love, you don’t get to ask for forgiveness and ask people to forget stuff,” Lentz says. “You get to ask for forgiveness, and then however people want to remember, they get to.” Here is how you might remember Carl Lentz: He was the tattooed, skinny jeans-wearing head pastor of Hillsong’s New York City church. He ministered to thousands of weekly worshipers in the 2010s, including the likes of Kevin Durant, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber, whom he baptized in the bathtub of a former NBA player. Bieber’s renewed public commitment to his faith helped rehabilitate his image after a difficult few years, and as his spiritual guide, Lentz became a kind of celebrity in his own right. But it all came crashing down in November 2020, when Hillsong Church announced that Lentz had been fired for leadership issues and “moral failures.” In a subsequent Instagram post, the pastor revealed he had been unfaithful to his wife, Laura Lentz. “This failure is on me, and me alone and I take full responsibility for my actions,” Lentz wrote in his 2020 post. A tabloid frenzy ensued. Lentz never returned to the pulpit. The couple retreated from public life to work on their marriage and raise their three kids. Now, almost six years later, they’ve emerged intact. And they want to help other couples do the same. Read more at the link in our bio. 📷: @shaun_pierson for @wsjmag
