I love all the dogs that come through the shelter doors. truly. But there is something so special to me about the shy dogs
this is Honey. Last week, it took a lot of patience and coaxing just to get her out of her kennel and on a leash for a walk. But in just 30 minutes outside with her, I got to watch her start to transform as she began to feel a little more comfortable and safe.
I often get asked, “How?” or I hear, “I could never volunteer at a shelter. It would break my heart.” And the truth is… it breaks mine, too. constantly. but I’d rather my heart break than Honey’s, as she tries to navigate a world that must feel so big and scary to her.
Dogs like Honey are my how and my why: watching a dog who was too scared to leave her kennel begin to let her guard down, explore the world around her, and show the playful girl that she is beneath all her fear. getting to make Honey’s day just a little bit better, even if it’s just 30 minutes of her feeling seen.
Getting to be a small part of that transformation is something I’ll choose every time, no matter how hard it gets.
They deserve to feel safe & feel seen. And if I can help even one dog realize that the world isn’t always so scary or that maybe not every person is going to let them down, it’s worth it. every single time ❤️🩹
