Three couples, one station forecourt, and the whole grammar of being with somebody written in what their hands are doing. He’s carrying her handbag — black, small, obviously hers — while she carries a blue plush toy pressed to her face like she’s eight years old, and neither of them thinks this is worth mentioning. Two in matching white shirts and backpacks, holding hands, heading in to something that requires white shirts. One in a green polo with a jacket, a bag and somebody else’s things all bundled under one arm while she reads whatever has just come through. And one woman alone in enormous jeans and headphones, under the station clock, keeping her own time. Bijlmer ArenA at the end of an afternoon: everybody between one place and the next, and the small unconscious choreography of who holds what.
