I think talking is so important for my students as they share thought and ideas, work together, and express emotions.

We're working on the right balance of listening and talking, while also practicing keeping the volume at a level that lets everyone be successful in our classroom.

If you have a loud or talkative class this year, these are a few things that have really helped in my classroom. 🩷

One thing I’ve done that helps tremendously is have the letters LOUD written up (bold and bright). If they get too loud, I erase (or delete) the letter D first so going from end to start of the word. I don’t say anything but kids notice and then give themselves reminders. If it gets loud again, erase another letter. I never add letters back. If all are erased, the activity ends. I’ve rarely in my entire career had to erase all 4. And as the year goes on, I use it less and less and often not at all. It’s super helpful at the beginning and for those extra loud classes to train them.
