ask most people where techno comes from and they’ll tell you berlin.

techno is called techno because of juan atkins. a black man from michigan who put out a record called “techno music” in 1988. who took a phrase out of a 1980 book about what happens to a society after industry, and named a whole genre with it. who started his own label in 1985 so he owned his own masters, at a time when almost nobody who looked like him did.

he died on friday. he was 64 years old. rest in peace to a legend.

you have heard his work even if you have never heard his name. so these are his flowers.

rest in peace juan atkins. the genre has your name on it, forever and always.
