Hip Dysplasia Awareness Month means we need to do our bit too!

I'm Leanne and this is Maddie my little hip chick and inspiration for Starfish Babes. She's 8 now but Maddie was diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia and put into the Pavlik Harness when she was 14weeks old back in 2014.

Our MCHN noticed her uneven thigh creases and recommended we have an ultrasound on her hips. Just like many of you, we had no idea what Hip Dysplasia was and that this was a potential sign.

The ultrasound tech said she "looked ok" so we went to our hospital appointment assuming everything was fine. What an absolute shock it was to leave the hospital in a Pavlik Harness wearing nothing but a nappy. She was a superstar until we got home and I layed her on the floor, she cried, I cried, for 3 days straight. We struggled with sleep and clothing and attended fortnightly appointments for adjustments but were so fortunate that it was *only 6 weeks 23/7 and another 3 weeks of night bracing before it was removed completely! We made it and she was discharged from Monash with healthy hips at 14months old. How lucky were we!
