New episode!

“A healthy functioning ecosystem as a baseline—when you can find that—I think is really important because then you can go and look at some degraded, awful, polluted stream and say, ‘Wait a minute, this is not normal.’ We could actually restore this to a healthy condition in the future and not just consider this the norm.” - Laura Cunningham

In our opening conversation, Laura Cunningham @lauracunningham_art and host, Ayana Young, explore field sketching, ecological memory, and how close observation can train our imagination. When we pause to notice what’s around us, we begin to see more than details. We see relationships, history, and possibility. Maybe the most radical practice is slowing down enough to witness.

This insight is critical. Even today you can hear tales from old timers about the abundance of wildlife in their youth. It’s echoed by the Nature-revering alien species in the ecological SciFi novel, Forfeiture, trying to explain to current day humanity the depredation they have wrought: “And we have compared what is now to what was before. It is a sorry picture. We see only shadows left. And we ask ourselves, ‘Can we convey to you what has been lost, what magnificence has been dismantled, what treasure has been squandered?” Excerpt from “Forfeiture” by JP Nebra
