Santa Ana mayoral candidate Dan Shimell is calling for an end to local police cooperation with ICE after two women monitoring federal immigration activity were arrested by Santa Ana officers. Speaking at an Oct. 20 City Council meeting, Shimell criticized the arrests of Madison Crabill and Adilene “Addie” Tonoco, who were detained after federal agents accused them of “stalking”. Shimell urged city leaders to prohibit ICE from using city facilities for staging operations, strengthen police accountability, and investigate the alleged police beating of resident Florentino López. He also called for the city to cancel its contracts with Flock Safety, whose automated license plate readers have raised concerns about federal agencies accessing local surveillance data.
