Erik Satie's Gymnopédie No. 1 (from the Trois Gymnopédies in 1888) is a slow, spare solo piano composition marked Lent et douloureux ("slow and painful"), built on simple, gently rocking harmonies and a hauntingly melody that creates a calm, introspective, almost hypnotic atmosphere.
Gymnopedie No. 1 was composed in Paris as part of a set of three related pieces whose dreamy, elegant restraint stood in deliberate contrast to the virtuosic Romantic music of the time and has since been seen as an early influence on later minimalist and ambient styles.
