Haitians Honor Their Ancestors Through Fèt Gede, a Two-Day Celebration of Life, Death, and Tradition

Every year on November 1 and 2, Haitians in Haiti and across the diaspora observe Fèt Gede, one of the most meaningful celebrations in Haitian Vodou. It is a time to honor loved ones who have passed away, remember our ancestors, and celebrate the connection between the living and the dead.

During Fèt Gede, Vodou practitioners gather at cemeteries to pray, light candles, make offerings, and pay their respects. Some wear black, purple, and white, while others celebrate through music, dancing, and traditional ceremonies.

At the heart of the celebration are the Gede spirits, who are associated with death, ancestors, and the cycle of life. Baron Samedi and Manman Brigitte are among the best-known spirits connected to these traditions.

While Fèt Gede takes place around the same time as All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, it has its own deep roots in Haitian history, spirituality, and culture.

For many Haitians, Fèt Gede is more than a day of remembrance. It is a celebration of those who came before us and the traditions that continue to connect generations.

Dockworkers set fire to tires to commence work stoppage in Genoa as part of a historic refusal to ship Israeli arms.

A historic work stoppage is beginning at 100 ports across four continents. The video shows workers in Genoa, Italy, blocking a passageway, halting operations at the start of the day. Speeches and protests will begin later today. Over $2 billion dollars worth of cargo will sit idle on October 30th as workers from across 100 ports (and counting) will protest against Isr*eli weapons shipments. In one of the largest coordinated day of actions observed in history, spanning four continents, dockworkers will unite to reject their labour being used for the transfer of weapons of war, specifically weapons used Isr*el for its g*nocide in G*za. According to the “No Harbour for G*nocide” website, dockworker demands are the following: * An immediate end to the g*nocide of the P*lestinian people and all imperialist wars; * No arms, amm*nition, military equipment or troops sent to war through their ports; * No ports turned into military bases, no to rearmament and the war economy; * Instead of we*pons budgets: health and safety measures, real wages, secure jobs, and no automation in place of dockworkers. The demands, known as the “Istanbul Declaration,” are signed and endorsed by the following unions: ENEDEP (Greece), USB (Italy), LAB (Basque Country), ODT (Morocco), Liman-İş (Türkiye), CGT (France), SEGDAMELIN-PEO (Cyprus) and WTWFI (India).
