KAFART 2026 Artist Spotlight: Benjamin Philip |
#ToHaveAndToHoldFor Benjamin Philip (@fimi_artelier ), patience is part of the craft. Much of his process happens in the looking, long before the final mark is made.
The result, in pastel, charcoal, and acrylic, is the trio of works he brings to KAFART 6: What the Clay Remembers, The Body Is a Vessel, and She Carried Us. Broken pots, bodies shaped like vessels, and the women who keep a household’s knowledge alive ask what we inherit, and what that inheritance asks of us in return.
In this conversation, the Ahmadu Bello University-trained artist, who grew up in a community with clay close at hand, talks about cracks as evidence of survival, why he leaves space for the viewer, and what he hopes lingers after the work is gone.
