KAFART 2026 Artist Spotlight: Usman Umar | #ToHaveAndToHold It began with a flower. Usman Umar (@ussyshotit ) picked one, photographed it almost without thinking, and sent the picture to his sister. Her reaction stayed with him. Soon he was photographing everything around him, and by 2023, with an SLR in hand, he had started building a visual language of his own. At KAFART, he shows Tulu Ta, a photograph taken in Maraban Jos, Kaduna, of a child in a moment he chose not to embellish. In this conversation, he talks about noticing, editing, and why the everyday deserves to be documented. KAFART 2026 Artist Spotlight: Zainabu Usman Yusuf | #ToHaveAndToHold After her mother died, Zainabu Usman Yusuf (@clayandculture.ng ) went looking online for the facial mark she remembered from childhood. The search kept returning a drum. Kalangu is also the name of the talking drum, and she struggled to find anything written about the mark Hausa women once wore. So she carved it into clay. In The Fifth Member, the Kaduna-based ceramic artist imagines the pot as one more member of the family, a vessel that carries the details of Hausa and Northern Nigerian life: hairstyles, architecture, the allo writing slate, the rawani turban, Ajami script, and Kalangu itself, cut boldly into one of the pots. She also tells us what happened when some of her pieces cracked in the kiln, and why she chose to repair them instead of starting over. KAFART 2026 Artist Spotlight: Trinity Kankara | #ToHaveAndToHold One story does not have to disappear for another to begin. It is the idea at the centre of The Next Story, Trinity Kankara (@kankara_draws )'s acrylic painting for KAFART. An elderly woman, grey and quietly smiling, paints her memories onto a clay pot, as she has since she was young. Behind her, a young girl watches, holding an empty pot of her own: a story not yet begun. In this conversation, the Kaduna-raised artist, who only began taking her practice seriously in 2024, talks about the person who believed in her before she did, what astigmatism has taught her about patience, and the heritage her late mother handed down. Preservation, she argues, should never limit the generations that follow. Read the full conversation on themoveee.com #KAFART26 #TrinityKankara #ArtistSpotlight #TheMoveee by @kafart_ng

KAFART 2026 Artist Spotlight: Roli Scott | #ToHaveAndToHold Roli Scott (@iamrolikaimani_ ) was at KAFART in 2024 and made herself a promise: next time, her work would be on the wall. This year, she keeps it. The Lagos-raised painter brings Our Society, a body of work that looks hard at what is happening around us: child marriage and domestic labour, solidarity among women, and the way traditional hairstyles have been flattened into markers of class. Across Lean on Me, Black Oyibo, and Little Women, hair, labour, and inheritance become ways of asking what the next generation is equipped to hold, and what we have taught ourselves to dismiss. In this conversation, she remembers a mother who had her sketching the buses and traffic of Lagos on long car rides, explains why she doesn't always know the story before she starts painting, and previews The Human Condition, a collection she hopes will give viewers a new love for the colour red. KAFART 2026 Artist Spotlight: Hezekiah Obidare | #ToHaveAndToHold Both are vessels. The head holds thought, memory, and identity. The pot holds nourishment, labour, and the knowledge handed from one generation to the next. For multidisciplinary artist Hezekiah Obidare (@hezekiahobidare ), the space between the two runs through everything he makes. At KAFART 6, he shows three acrylic canvases from his series In the Blossom of My Heritage (Series IV, V, and VI), made between 2024 and 2025. Rooted in Ipetumodu, Osun State, home to a pottery tradition he has spent years working to document and promote, Obidare moves between painting and a growing practice in ceramics, asking what an ordinary object can say about the people who made and used it. In this conversation, he reflects on why to hold something is to accept responsibility for it, how heritage can evolve without losing its meaning, and the larger body of work he hopes to make next. KAFART 2026 Artist Spotlight: Benjamin Philip | #ToHaveAndToHold For Benjamin Philip (@fimi_artelier ), patience is part of the craft. Much of his process happens in the looking, long before the final mark is made. The result, in pastel, charcoal, and acrylic, is the trio of works he brings to KAFART 6: What the Clay Remembers, The Body Is a Vessel, and She Carried Us. Broken pots, bodies shaped like vessels, and the women who keep a household’s knowledge alive ask what we inherit, and what that inheritance asks of us in return. In this conversation, the Ahmadu Bello University-trained artist, who grew up in a community with clay close at hand, talks about cracks as evidence of survival, why he leaves space for the viewer, and what he hopes lingers after the work is gone.
