It is rare to be present for a moment that becomes part of history. On November 4, 2008, I was at Grant Park with Dave Mackenzie, Jeff Becker, and a quarter of a million other Americans. It was an unseasonably warm night for early November, and the energy, excitement, and optimism in the crowd were palpable.
I am grateful and blessed to say I witnessed President-elect Barack Obama’s election-night rally and victory speech firsthand. It was a moment bigger than any one person, political party, or election. America had elected its first African American president, and Chicago was at the center of history.
Today, Chicago is home to the Obama Presidential Center, a destination worth visiting for locals and tourists alike. More than a museum, the campus includes an impressive main building, gardens, a playground, a branch of the Chicago Public Library, public art installations, nature paths, and a full-size NBA basketball court designed for community use.
It is a meaningful investment in Chicago’s South Side and another architectural addition to a city that has always had a remarkable story to tell.
