Overlooking the Ancient Agora stands the Temple of Hephaestus, one of the best-preserved ancient Greek temples in the world.
Construction began around 449 BC, during the rise of Athens' Golden Age. Dedicated to Hephaestus, the god of fire, metalworking and craftsmanship, the temple also honoured Athena Ergane, patroness of artisans.
The two deities were closely connected in Athenian mythology. According to one tradition, following Hephaestus' unsuccessful attempt to force himself upon Athena, the earth gave birth to Erichthonius, a legendary early king of Athens whom Athena raised as her own. His story became intertwined with the city's mythical origins.
Remarkably, the temple survived largely intact through the centuries, in part because it was converted into a Christian church during late antiquity.
Today, nearly 2,500 years after its construction began, it remains one of the magnificent sights greeting visitors to the Ancient Agora and a remarkable reminder of Athens' Classical past.
