The creation of a man captivated by mythology and symbolism. Inside the Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra, Portugal sits the Initiation Well.

Despite its appearance, the well was constructed in the early 20th century as part of an estate commissioned by Portuguese businessman António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro.

Monteiro and Italian architect Luigi Manini created a landscape filled with architecture and mysterious symbolism inspired by mythology, alchemy, Freemasonry, and even the Knights Templar.

The well descends about 88 feet down into the earth, with a spiral staircase winding around nine levels, which has been interpreted as a reference to Dante’s Divine Comedy.

At the bottom of well, underground tunnels connect to other parts of the estate.

Although commonly associated with secret initiation ceremonies, there is no concrete historical evidence that rituals took place here. Monteiro also left no known definitive explanation of the well’s intended purpose, leaving much of its meaning open to interpretation.

Today, Quinta da Regaleira is part of the UNESCO-listed Cultural Landscape of Sintra and remains one of Portugal’s most fascinating and iconic architectural landmarks.

During Japan’s Edo period (1615–1868), samurai without wars to fight, served in roles beyond warfare. One of which, was acting as the police for the city of Edo (modern Tokyo).

Although Japan had entered a relatively peaceful era under the Tokugawa shogunate, violence and crime remained a concern. Samurai tasked with policing the capital needed protection without the bulk of traditional battlefield armor.

One solution was the kusari katabira, a coat which was reinforced with iron chainmail and lacquered metal plates.

Unlike the more elaborate suits of armor associated with samurai warfare, these could be worn beneath ordinary clothing, providing a discreet layer of defense.

The tatami hitai ate was a folding head protector constructed from hinged iron bands. Additional chainmail protected the back of the head. Feet could be protected with armored pieces called kogake.

Up until the Meiji Restoration in the late 19th century, the Samurai class still kept order in the streets of Edo even in peacetime.

In my conversation about ancient Greece with Dillon from @ponderingadventurer, we discuss one of his adventures to the Royal Tombs of Aigai, modern Vergina, in northern Greece, and the extraordinary archaeological treasures discovered there!

Once the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Macedon, Aigai was the burial place of Macedonian royalty, including members of the dynasty that produced Alexander the Great.

Among the remarkable discoveries made by archaeologists are magnificent golden larnaxes, elaborate armor, weapons, and other treasures dating back more than 2,300 years.

While the precise identities of some of those buried remain debated, including whether the most famous tomb belongs to Alexander’s father, Philip II, or his half-brother, Philip III Arrhidaeus, these artifacts offer an extraordinary glimpse into one of antiquity’s most influential royal dynasties.

🎥 To hear more about these fascinating discoveries, Dillon’s experience visiting the tombs, and our shared passion for exploring the ancient world, check out our latest conversation on YouTube!

This highly ornamented church is not medieval.
In fact, it’s not even 150 years old.

Instead, it’s what happens when a 19th century wealthy Scotsman needed to build a church for his elderly mother and he happened to be a history enthusiast too.

Walter Douglas Campbell was the 8th child of Archibald Campbell and a member of the wealthy Campbell family.

When his mother Caroline was 60, she found it difficult to travel by carriage the long distance to the nearest church and so she asked him to build her a closer church. In 1881, he began construction and he let his love for history guide the project.

St Conan’s Kirk, as it’s called, includes a Norman doorway, Celtic designs, Gothic flying buttresses and even a Saxon tower. The Kirk also contains a chapel featuring an alabaster effigy of Robert the Bruce. The project’s plans passed to Walter’s sister Helen after his death and it was finished in 1929.

St Conan’s Kirk is a short drive from Kilchurn Castle along Loch Awe and definitely worth a stop when visiting the area.

Between epic heroes of the Bronze Age and marble temples of the Classical Period lies a chapter of Greek history that receives far less attention.

After the collapse of the Mycenaean world around 1200 BC, Greece entered what has been called the “Greek Dark Age”, centuries that left behind fewer written records and monumental remains than the civilizations that came before or after.

Out of this, emerged the Geometric Period.

This Athenian amphora, dating to about 720–700 BC, comes from the final decades of that era. Nearly 2800 years ago, it stood above a grave as a monument to the deceased.

Its surface is covered in the geometric patterns from which the period derives its name.

Musicians, warriors, horses, and chariots form a funerary procession across the vessel, preserving a glimpse of the rituals and society of an early Greek world that we understand far less completely than the Classical Period.

By the time this amphora was created, Greece was experiencing rapid change. Writing had returned, communities were developing into the poleis, and artists were increasingly using images to tell stories.

The Parthenon itself was still nearly three centuries away.

Another interesting detail I noticed was that the warriors in the procession no longer have the typical hour glass shaped shields of the Bronze Age, but they do wear helmets that appear to have a single horse hair tail at the top, which is more consistent with Bronze Age imagery (as in the Warrior Vase in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens). This seems to reflect the gradual transition from the old battle array of the Mycenaeans to the eventual rounded shields with fully crested helmets of the classical period.

The Church of the Venerable Third Order of Saint Francis was begun in 1792, although the Third Order itself had been established in Porto over a century earlier.

The Third Order offered laypeople a way to follow Franciscan spirituality without withdrawing from everyday life to become friars or nuns. Over time, the community established its own religious complex in Porto.

The church they built reflects the changing artistic tastes of late 18th century Portugal. Its interior is dominated by Neoclassical architecture, with towering pilasters, classical ornament and a vaulted ceiling decorated with painted scenes.

Gold detailing, religious sculpture and the elaborate sanctuary add richness to an otherwise ordered and symmetrical interior.

More than two centuries later, the church is still part of the historic complex of the Venerable Third Order of Saint Francis of Porto.

The Monastery of São Vicente de Fora was founded in 1147 by Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king, following the Christian conquest of Lisbon. Its name, São Vicente “de Fora”, comes from its original position outside the medieval city walls.

The medieval monastery was later replaced by the monumental complex we see today.

From the monastery’s rooftop, views of Lisbon include terracotta roofs, the Tagus River, and the great dome of the National Pantheon framed between the stone towers and balustrades.

Nearly 900 years after the monastery was founded, it still offers one of the best views over the old city.

Perched above the winding River Forth, Stirling Castle has stood at the heart of some of the most important moments in Scottish history.

For centuries, whoever controlled Stirling controlled the main gateway between the Scottish Highlands and Lowlands. Its strategic importance made the castle a prize fought over repeatedly during the Wars of Scottish Independence, with the battlefields of Stirling Bridge and Bannockburn lying nearby.

Stirling was more than a fortress.

It became one of Scotland’s great royal residences, closely associated with the Stewart kings and queens. Mary, Queen of Scots was crowned here in 1543, while James V transformed the castle with the Renaissance Royal Palace that still dominates much of its interior today.

From medieval stronghold to Renaissance royal court, few places are as important to the story of Scotland like Stirling Castle.

Guimarães 🇵🇹 - Portugal was born here

Few cities are as closely connected to the birth of a nation as Guimarães.

In 1128, just outside the city, the young nobleman Afonso Henriques defeated the forces of his mother, Teresa of León, at the Battle of São Mamede. The victory gave Afonso control of the County of Portugal and became one of the defining steps toward an independent Portuguese kingdom.

Afonso would eventually become Portugal’s first king, which is why Guimarães remains so closely associated with the foundation of the country.

Today its medieval castle, churches, historic streets and monument to Afonso Henriques preserve that connection to Portugal’s beginnings.

“Aqui nasceu Portugal.” — “Portugal was born here.”
