Our rules for the dark months.

Do the outside part early.
The light is best between eleven and three now,
so that is when you walk,
or swim, or drive somewhere.
Not after lunch.
During it.

Be up at the Bastione at five.
The sun goes fast this time of year
and the whole city turns orange
for about fifteen minutes.
Then the lamps come on below you
and it is worth another ten.

Start the evening at six.
Aperitivo is better early.
The bars are not full yet,
the good seats are free,
and nobody is rushing you out.

Eat somewhere small.
This is the season for the places
with eight tables and a kitchen you can hear.
Villanova and Marina are full of them,
and in November you can walk in.

And then stay out.
That is the part people get wrong.
Dark at half five does not mean home at seven.
It means the evening has three more hours in it
than it did in July.

Buio presto.
