(S)low season

Low season.
Slow season.
Depends where you put the brackets.

November here is both.

The city keeps its own hours now.
Mornings are bright and cold enough
to want a coffee standing up.
Afternoons stay warm, right through lunch.

And there are still people in the water.
Not locals.
Mostly visitors.
The locals are on the sand
in a jacket with the paper,
no intention of getting wet.

Both are right,
and there is room on the beach for everyone,
which is rather the point of this month.

The house is at its best like this too.
Four rooms, fast wifi,
a patio that still gets the sun at one,
and a city ten minutes from everything.

Which is the whole idea behind Work & Wander.

If you are coming to work,
this is the quietest,
clearest month to do it.
If you are coming to wander,
the roads are empty
and the beaches are yours.
If you want both,
that is exactly what this place was built for.

Four ways to stay.
The Reset, a week.
The Flow, two.
The Deep Dive, three.
The Lifestyle, a month.

(S)low season.
Our favourite time to have people here.

🌖This Weekend

Buio presto

A good one.

Friday is San Saturnino,
the city’s own saint,
martyred here in 304, the story goes,
with a basilica at Piazza San Cosimo
built over the spot a couple of centuries later
and standing there ever since.
Go inside if you can.
It is one of the oldest churches
in the whole Mediterranean,
and most people walk past it every day.

Saturday is Halloween.
Sunday is Ognissanti,
when the shops shut,
the families all eat at the same hour,
and the city goes quiet
in the best way it does.

Here is the weekend.

Tonight.
Our favJazz Alarm, with Basilico and Morandini,
a special set from the Premio Saba.
@radioxsocialclub

Friday morning.
The procession for the patron saint.
10:15 from the Cathedral up in Castello,
down through the city to the basilica.

Friday night.
Santa Maria de la Psicodelia, from 21:00.
Listen carefully, eyes open.
@radioxsocialclub

Saturday.
Poetto Horror Run and Walk at 16:00.
Run it or walk it, costume encouraged.
@suncity.runclub

Sunday.
Domenica al Museo.
The Museo Archeologico free from 8:30 to 19:30,
the Pinacoteca from 9:30,
last entry at 18:45.
@museoarcheoca

And one worth leaving the city for.
Su Prugadoriu in Seui, up in Ogliastra,
running until Sunday.
Workshops, tastings, masks,
and the old festa po is animas,
the Sardinian version of these days,
older than the one you know.
Free, all day, and worth the drive.

For everything else happening at Halloween,
the full list is over at @thisweek.cagliari

Around all of it,
the part nobody programmes.
The warm afternoon in the middle of the week,
whichever one it turns out to be.
Aperitivo at six, because it is already dark.
The walk home past lit windows.

The song this week.
Buonanotte fiorellino, Francesco De Gregori.

Buon fine settimana.

Buio presto

Our rules for the dark months.

Do the outside part early.
The light is best between eleven and three now,
so that is when you walk,
or swim, or drive somewhere.
Not after lunch.
During it.

Be up at the Bastione at five.
The sun goes fast this time of year
and the whole city turns orange
for about fifteen minutes.
Then the lamps come on below you
and it is worth another ten.

Start the evening at six.
Aperitivo is better early.
The bars are not full yet,
the good seats are free,
and nobody is rushing you out.

Eat somewhere small.
This is the season for the places
with eight tables and a kitchen you can hear.
Villanova and Marina are full of them,
and in November you can walk in.

And then stay out.
That is the part people get wrong.
Dark at half five does not mean home at seven.
It means the evening has three more hours in it
than it did in July.

Buio presto.
We are not complaining.

🤎 The Space

Buio presto

The hour went back last weekend
and now it is dark at half five.

The first few days it feels wrong.
You leave somewhere at six
and it is already night.

Then you stop fighting it
and the city turns out to be better this way.

Lights on in Castello
before anyone has had dinner.
The Bastione lit from below.
Via Roma glowing under the palms,
the port black behind it.
Windows up in Villanova
where you can see straight into kitchens.

The evening just starts earlier.
Aperitivo at six instead of eight.
People at tables by seven,
coats on the back of chairs,
staying longer because there is nowhere
the light is pulling them.

And the days are still warm.
Twenty degrees at lunch,
the sea still in use,
the whole afternoon outside
before it goes.

Buio presto.
Not less day.
Just more evening.

☀️ This Weekend

Verso nord

Some weekends the best thing in Cagliari
is the road out of it.

October is made for this.
Sun without the heat,
empty roads,
and beaches you get to yourself
if you are out of the house by eight.

But if you are staying,
here is the week.

Tonight.
Jazz Alarm is back at the Social Club.
Dreep 4tet live from half past eight,
the jam picks up after.
@radioxsocialclub

Friday.
Foxi e Herny and friends.
Soul, funk and jazz straight off the records.
The kind you listen to properly.
From nine.
@radioxsocialclub

Saturday.
Wine Not?
Pick a glass, then the music takes over.
Big Mama, a Vasco tribute, DJs into the night,
all at the Fiera.
@winenotfest

Sunday.
Ceramica with @roartceramics
Shape a small box the Kurinuki way.
Wabi sabi, the beauty of the imperfect.
Ten to twelve, places limited, DM them to hold one.
@41condiviso

Around all of it,
the part nobody programmes.
No fixed plan.
Lunch somewhere.
Home after dark with sand in the car.

The song this week.
La vita com’è, Brunori Sas.

Buon fine settimana.

Verso nord

If you have three days and a car,
this is the one we would do.

Day one.
Leave Cagliari early and drive north.
Stop in Bosa if you want the prettier road,
the one along the coast
with the river, the castle
and the coloured houses stacked up the hill.
It takes longer. Take it anyway.

Sleep in Alghero.
Walk the sea walls at sunset,
eat late in the old town,
and order the lobster if someone else is paying.
Catalan style.

Day two.
Stintino and La Pelosa in the morning.
Early, properly early.
The light is best before nine
and so is the car park.
Swim, dry off, eat grilled fish nearby,
and spend the afternoon doing nothing.

Day three.
Come back through the interior.
Stop at a nuraghe.
Eat somewhere with four tables
and no menu in English.
Be home for dinner.

Three things we learned.

Everything is further than it looks.
The map lies. The roads bend.

Fill the tank when you see a station,
not when you need one.

And do not plan the last day.
You will want to stay somewhere longer.

Ask us and we will help you plan.

⛱️ The Space

Verso nord

October is when the island opens up.

The heat is gone.
The ferries have emptied.
And the roads that were bumper to bumper in August
are yours to follow, at your own pace.

So we went north.

Up through the middle of the island,
past the vines and the mountains,
past nuraghi standing quietly in the fields,
ancient traces of a civilisation that shaped this land.
There are so many along the way,
each with a story worth stopping for.
Do a little research before you go.
Some of the most fascinating places
are the ones you might otherwise drive straight past.

Alghero by evening.
Yellow walls, Catalan street signs,
the sea on three sides of the old town,
and tables outside in the middle of October.

And then La Pelosa, at eight in the morning.
Almost nobody there.
That white sand,
water so shallow and so clear
it barely looks real,
and the old tower on the islet,
with the light still low behind it.

In summer, you queue for that.
In October, you can stand there
and take it all in.

This is the thing about Sardinia.
Everyone comes for a week in August
and falls in love with this beach.
But there is so much more beyond it:
layers of history, small towns, ancient stones,
and roads that lead you somewhere unexpected.

Sometimes, all you need to do
is keep going north.

Verso nord.
Go a little further.
Stop a little longer.
See what you find.

☀️ This Weekend

La vita fuori

Sit down on Via Roma for ten minutes.

Not on the way to anything.
Just sit on one of the benches
under the palms,
facing the old buildings,
and actually look at them.

The green in front, the stone behind.
Both of them there the whole time,
waiting for someone
to stop walking past.

That is the whole thing.
A sum of small things.
A bench, an hour, the light at six,
and a city you have seen a thousand times
looking like something again.

Here is the weekend.

Tonight.
Jazz Alarm, with Weird 4tet.
Live from 20:30, jam from 21:30.
@radioxsocialclub

Friday.
Ceramics workshop with Roart, 18:00 to 20:00.
Message them for a place.
@41condiviso
@roartceramics

Friday night.
Funk and groove until one.
@radioxsocialclub

Saturday.
Morning
Pink Wellness yoga day at 9:30,
followed by a healthy lunch.
@palazzotirsocagliarimgallery

Afternoon.
Ground Loop Open Air at the Exma.
16:30 until one in the morning.
Outside, all afternoon and all night.
@radioxsocialclub
@exma.earth

Saturday night, the other one.
Oktoberfest at the Fiera.
Long benches, beer from Munich,
and a very long night.
@oktobersardegna

Sunday morning.
A run at La Corte del Sole, 10:00.
Turn up, that is the whole entry process.
@suncity.runclub

Sunday.
Minor Festival, first edition, at the Exma.
Culture, books, music, technology.
For all details @minor.festival
Aperitivo with Cantina Canu,
The best food from @babeufcagliari
and the @radioxsocialclub bar open all evening.
A whole day outside, start to finish.
@minor.festival

Around all of it,
the part nobody programmes.
That bench at six.
Walking home the long way
because the evening lets you.

None of it is big.
That is the point.

The song this week.
Una somma di piccole cose, Niccolò Fabi.

Buon fine settimana.

La vita fuori

Three women on a Wednesday morning.
Standing chest deep, talking.
Not really swimming.

They have been doing this for thirty years.

Sardinia is one of those places
where people live a long time.
Everyone has a theory about why.
The food, the wine, the walking, the genes.

Stand on the spiaggia at nine
and you get a simpler one.

Life here happens outside.

Not in a gym, not on a screen.
In the water, in the wind,
in the sound of small waves
and other people’s conversations
carrying further than they should.

Nobody is doing this to feel better.
They are doing it because it is Wednesday,
and because the others will be there.

The same hour.
The same stretch of water.
Coffee after, standing up, five minutes.
Then the rest of the day.

Fifty years of that
is not a routine.
It is a life.

It is not only that they live longer here.
It is that they live it outside,
and it adds up.

Come in the morning.
Stay in a little too long.

#lavitafuori #fromus #casasangio by @casasangio

🪴 The Space

La vita fuori

Eight kilometres of city
that happens to have sand on it.

Poetto in October
is where everyone ends up.

Someone running the boulevard at eight,
the same route they do every morning,
Someone biking,
Two people walking the whole length of it
to finish a conversation.

By one, the tables fill.
Lunch in the sun,
and nobody in any rush
to go back to anything.

Towels still out.
People still swimming,
because the sea does not know yet
that the summer is over.

Bikes, dogs, prams,
a volleyball net that nobody takes down,
and the light going long across the water
by five.

This is the thing about this city.
Life is slower here,
and most of it
happens outside.

La vita fuori.
Eight kilometres of it.

☀️ This Weekend

La luce bassa

The season turned this week.

Warm days, cool evenings,
the sea still fine for swimming,
and a city with its outdoor tables back.

The light is changing, too.
The afternoons grow shorter,
the shadows stretch across the streets,
and Cagliari takes on that softer,
warmer colour just before sunset.
The old stone buildings catch the last rays of the day, their façades turning gold,
balconies and rooftops glowing for a little while before everything turns into dark blue.

Here is the weekend.

Friday.
Climax, 21:00.
Soul, jazz, funk, hip-hop.
@radioxsocialclub
In one of our favourite places.

Saturday.
Can’t make it tonight?
Go tomorrow.
Hot Pants & Smoky Underwear,
starting at 21:00.
@radioxsocialclub

Sunday.
An early start.
10:00, Piazza Arcipelago.
Sunday City Run Club.
A little movement and fun before the day begins.
@suncity.runclub

Then, an early taste of Oktoberfest.
@palazzodoglio

Around all of it,
the part nobody programmes.

Golden hour on Cagliari’s old buildings,
and familiar streets look a little different.
Poetto on a quiet morning.
A beer outside at nine without needing the shade.
And the first night you close the window.

The song this week.
La luce dell’est, Lucio Battisti.

A song for this in-between light.
For the slow shift from summer into autumn,
for the feeling that something is changing
without needing to say exactly what.

Because sometimes the season,
doesn’t announce itself.
It just changes the colour of the city.

Buon fine settimana.

La luce bassa

There is a particular light in October.

Low, warm, slower somehow.

The beach,
late afternoon.
Palms in the last light,
the water going quiet,
and the day taking its time.

It is the kind of light you start looking for.
And in Cagliari,
there are places that catch it just right.

The Bastione,
late afternoon.
Caffè de Candia or Libarium,
the port below,
and the whole city turning orange
while you sit still for an hour.
@caffedecandia
@libarium

Via Roma, early evening.
The arcades catch the last of the sun
and the pavement tables are free again.
An Ichnusa, something salty,
people walking home from work.

Calamosca, Sunday lunch.
A table by the water,
the light softening as the afternoon goes on.
Stay until it goes down.
@terrazzecalamosca

And the one nobody books.
The patio at home.
Seven o’clock,
a line of sun across the table,
Still pleasantly warm from the day,
Our favourite room in October,
and it is not even a room.

Follow the light.
The rest sorts itself out.
