Three women on a Wednesday morning.
Standing chest deep, talking.
Not really swimming.

Stand on the spiaggia at nine
and you get a simpler one.

In the water, in the wind,
in the sound of small waves
and other people’s conversations
carrying further than they should.

Nobody is doing this to feel better.
They are doing it because it is Wednesday,
and because the others will be there.

The same hour.
The same stretch of water.
Coffee after, standing up, five minutes.
Then the rest of the day.

Fifty years of that
is not a routine.
It is a life.

It is not only that they live longer here.
It is that they live it outside,
and it adds up.

Come in the morning.
